Preseli Pembrokeshire's AM is supporting Wales's bid to stage the European football championships in 2016.
Paul Davies, who is also Shadow Welsh Sports Minister, says Wales should do its utmost to attract major sporting events.
"Hosting Euro 2016 would be an excellent way of promoting football in Wales, and Wales in general," he said.
"It would not only inspire a generation of children to sporting greatness but would also be a great platform for promoting Wales and bring great economic benefit too."
The Celtic Manor at Newport is hosting golf's Ryder Cup next year and Mr Davies is keen that it's not the last major sporting event in the country.
"It is crucial that we attract major sporting events to Wales after the Ryder Cup," he added.
"I hope that Wales will also play an important part in the 2012 Olympics and that the Ryder Cup is just the first in a string of world class events hosted here."
