Commenting on the Hywel Dda Local Health Board Rural Health Services Strategy Spend to Save Plan document dated 9th July 2010, Paul Davies AM said –
"I am horrified by this document. To propose that Withybush General Hospital is downgraded to a Rural General Hospital and move vital services to Carmarthen is simply not acceptable. It is what the people of Pembrokeshire fought so hard against four years ago.
To propose the loss of services from Withybush Hospital such as Intensive Care, a consultant led Obstetrics Department and Acute Paediatric in patient services is very dangerous.
I am also extremely concerned to read in the document of a 25% reduction in acute beds and a loss of 80 community hospital beds in the region. A reduction in the workforce equivalent to 1,200 full time jobs is equally as worrying.
I am very sceptical about the timing of this document. To propose a 4-6 week public engagement programme in August and early September is ludicrous, especially at a time when many people are away on annual leave. For the document to state implementation by December 2010 will, I am sure fill the people of Pembrokeshire with horror.
It is clear having read this document that the health services which the people of Pembrokeshire rely on are not safe under this Labour/Plaid Welsh Assembly Government, and are sadly once again under attack."
