There are growing calls for a new scheme to ensure that iconic Welsh food products maintain ‘protected status’ after Brexit.
Fourteen Welsh products have been accorded Protected Food Name status, including Pembrokeshire potatoes, laverbread and Anglesey sea salt, and the Shadow Agriculture Secretary, Paul Davies AM, has called for the Welsh and UK Governments to work together to conceive a replacement scheme.
Mr Davies said:
“Ultimately, we all want the same thing, which is to ensure a seamless transition to a new set of arrangements which lock in the premium that products like Welsh lamb, Anglesey Sea Salt and Caerphilly cheese have.
“Sadly, the First Minister seems to be better at identifying problems than at offering solutions.
“It’s not beyond the wit of man to design a similar scheme which recognises the unique quality and origins of Welsh food and drink products, and that’s why we need to see both governments working constructively together ahead of our departure from the EU.”
