Local Assembly Member Paul Davies has thrown his weight behind this year’s 10th anniversary WWF-Cymru Earth Hour celebrations, which includes a special ‘Message in a Bottle’ campaign, demonstrating the strength of feeling across Wales for climate change action.
Earth Hour takes place at 8:30pm on Saturday 25 March, and will see hundreds of millions of people coming together, across the globe, in a symbolic and spectacular lights out display in support of climate change action. To mark the occasion, the Welsh arm of the global conservation charity has been busy collecting messages from across Wales, for its special ‘Message in a Bottle’ campaign.
A specially commissioned 8m, giant ‘Message in a Bottle’ sculpture, by artist Lulu Quinn, and made from hundreds of unwanted and used bottles symbolising the gathered messages, will call on Welsh politicians and the world to take urgent national and global action on climate change.
Mr Davies said: “I’m very happy to support the work of WWF Cymru in tackling climate change through the reduction of our emissions. After all, climate change affects us all – and we all have a duty to work together to protect the world. I’m encouraging everyone across Pembrokeshire to switch off their lights in a symbolic show of support for this important cause.”
The Message in a Bottle campaign is based on the age-old, romantic practice, of sending a message in a bottle, which traditionally inspires the finder to take action and fulfil the wishes of the sender. WWF Cymru is turning this old practice on its head, with the aim of getting politicians in Cardiff Bay to feel similarly energised and stirred into action to reduce national emissions.

It’s good to see so many of our elected representatives prioritising their time to learn more about the messages we have gathered from ordinary people across Wales. There is real appetite for the Senedd to take action now.”
The Message in a Bottle project is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and by the players of People's Postcode Lottery.
