Local Assembly Member, Paul Davies AM recently enjoyed a visit to Ramsey Island accompanied by RSPB representatives.
This beautiful reserve is located approximately 1 km off the coast of the St David's peninsula and is an important site for breeding seabirds. Introduced non-native mammals are having a huge impact on seabird colonies on offshore islands across the globe, and in 2000 an ambitious rat eradication project was carried out on Ramsey. As a result Ramsey Island is now free of rats and mice which means that burrow-nesting seabirds can breed safely, and RSPB staff and volunteers on the reserve are working hard to attract puffins back to the island.
Commenting on the visit, Paul Davies AM said “I have had the pleasure of visiting Ramsey Island on a number of occasions, and every time I am amazed by its stunning beauty. It is easy to see why Ramsey Island and the St David’s Peninsula in general attract so many visitors. During my visit it was fantastic to see seals and their pups.
It was very useful to talk to the RSPB officers who accompanied me on the visit to keep up to date with the issues that are affecting wildlife. It is important that politicians are mindful of the impact of any decision-making on the local environment and on the wildlife population.”
