Ophthalmology services in Pembrokeshire have been raised in the National Assembly Chamber thanks to local Assembly Member Paul Davies. Mr Davies called on the Minister for Health and Social Services to make a statement on this matter as soon as possible, following several constituents expressing concerns that the local health board are refusing cataract treatment to patients who have already had treatment on their other eye.
Paul Davies said, "This is an increasingly frustrating issue for a number of my constituents who have been told that they cannot receive the treatment that they desperately need. I am given to understand that delays in follow-up out-patient appointments within the Ophthalmology department have meant that unfortunately, patients have been refused cataract treatment. Sadly, the refusal of such treatment can cause health problems for these patients in the long term and have a negative impact on the quality of people's lives."
"Some health care provisions in Pembrokeshire have been neglected by the Welsh Government in recent years and I sincerely hope that the Welsh Government can address these concerns as a matter of urgency. This situation needs to be monitored closely and for my part, I will continue to pressurise the Minister to work closer with Hywel Dda health board to ensure that this issue is resolved as quickly as possible."
