SHADOW Education Minister Paul Davies AM today wrote to Jane Hutt about reports that universities across Wales may be forced to cut courses as a result of budgets cuts, while millions remains unspent in European Structural Funds.
In his letter to the Education Minister Mr Davies, the Welsh Conservative AM for Preseli Pembrokeshire, said:
"Dear Jane,
I am writing in regards to reports that universities across Wales may have to cut courses because of a steep reduction in funding next year. These reports are extremely worrying and the potential repercussions of cut backs in courses offered at Welsh universities could cause long-term damage to the Welsh economy, skills base, and the promotion of life-long learning.
I am also concerned that the Assembly Government is not taking full advantage of funding available from European Structural Funding, in particular the European Social Fund which has a specific priority for funding programmes which can supply young people with the skills needed for learning and future employment. This priority has £109 million currently available and I would be grateful if you could clarify whether the Assembly Government intends to make use of this funding.
I would be grateful if you could confirm what steps the Assembly Government is taking to ensure that the quality of Higher Education in Wales is not compromised as a result of funding cuts.
In view of the public importance of this issue I am making this letter available to the media.
I look forward to your response. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
Paul Davies AM
