Welsh Government changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) – including a transfer of 15 per cent from Pillar 1 to Pillar 2 will leave Welsh farmers at a disadvantage in the market place, says local Assembly Member Paul Davies. France has decided to modulate at 3%, Germany at 4.5%, England at 12% and the Welsh Government has decided to modulate at 15%.
Mr Davies said, "While I'm pleased that the Minister has finally made a decision on CAP reform and that farmers can now make the business decisions that they need to make to plan for the future, this modulation of 15% will be a blow to Welsh farmers. They are now at a huge disadvantage to our fellow UK farmers and an even bigger disadvantage against other EU farmers."
He added, "The Welsh Government should be doing all that it can to support our farmers, but in reality they have hamstrung the industry. I look forward to the Welsh Government's response to the Kevin Roberts review and hope there will be a positive message from the Minister regarding the resilience of Welsh farming."
